Short Read that Leaves you Wanting More
Rating (3)
Date: 2010-05-12
This is a story about 3 generations of women, from the time Lottie O'Cadhain married Mr. Davies to the day her daughter, Betty Davies Randolph gives birth to Marjorie Polly Randolph. The book is narrated by Betty in a story fashion ,with an open and close by Polly, who tells us that Betty died at age 69. We see how their life in VA was during the 1920's to the Great War and meet the cast of characters who come in and out of their lives on Milk Farm Road.
This is an interesting way to bring small-town life during the Depression to view. Although the characters are mostly under-developed, there are only 170 pages, after all, you come to hope for the best for all of them and get used to each of their quirks. This is much better than Ellen Foster- the author's first novel. I wish the book continued into Polly's life and whether they ever escaped Lottie and told us what became of Trudie and her many children!

Sweet Intergenerational Tale of Southern Women
Rating (4)
Date: 2009-05-13
This novel is an easy to read, warm-hearted account of intergenerational female bonding in the south. Women share pain and closeness, giving one another sustenance and nurturing. The wisdom of women and mothers is celebrated with wit and drama. The book is very enjoyable and sweet to read. It has the flavor of Cold Sassy Tree and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe: A Novel.

real conversations

This is a great example of a "conversational" book. It is totally believable. I can perfectly picture Betty gabbing away to her daughter as she is shelling peas at the kitchen table.
